On this week's episode I am going to tell Russ the story of Denis Rader a.k.a BTK Strangler. Rader is an American serial killer who killed 10 people in Wichita Kansas in the 70s and 80s, but his reign of terror lasted about 30 years! Denis Rader was a family man, good husband, good father and veteran on the outside but underneath he was as sick and twisted as they come. He fantasized about binding and torturing women for most of his life. He claims that the urge became too great and one day he just couldn't control it anymore.
BTK would begin by choosing his victim and stalk her for a short time before deciding to carry out the act. He would carefully plan out the entire murder and would usually break into their homes. Sometimes, he would get into their house while they were out and just wait for them to get home before tying them up and asphyxiating them. He would take a momento to remember them by and would photograph the victims bound up in different positions.
This man was so narcissistic that he began playing a cat and mouse game with media and authorities, sending them letters and pictures. The BTK cases were cold for about 12 years until he got too cocky and underestimated modern technology.
BTK is currently serving 175 years in solitary confinement and will remain there until his dying breath.
I'm not exaggerating when I say I am genuinely afraid of him.... Moral of this story, you don't really know anyone in your life. Even the people you think are closest to you may in fact be a serial killer.
